About the academy

Center of Gravity Golf Trains Coaches for the Afriyea Golf Academy

Center of Gravity Golf is very proud to be associated with the Afriyea Golf Academy project. I met the Academy founder Isaiah Mwesige on Linked In and we immediately had a connection. After a short conversation, we donated our book “Get Your Swing in Gear” and the video series for the students, as well as Center of Gravity Golf instructor training videos and materiel for the new golf coaches at the academy. Now as a member of the Afriyea Board of Directors for golf education, we want to spread the word as much as we can for this very worthwhile humanitarian project.  While the Academy is open to all children Uganda, a trained focus is on recruiting and retaining young girls in the golf and education process. This initiative is creating a tremendous change in the way these children view themselves, and the world around them. Isaiahs story is nothing short of inspirational and I have included a short excerpt from the Afriyea website about this wonderful project. The academy projects include (Jr. Golf Program) (SchoolGolf Program) (Girls for Golf Program) and (Golf Internship Program)

The story of Afriyea

The inception and development of AFRIYEA Golf Academy reflects its CEO and founder’s own life experiences very closely.

Isaiah Mwesige struggled to complete his basic education, having been orphaned aged only twelve and being brought up by his brother Eugene, there was very little money available to support the most basic of needs. Having been convinced by a close friend that he could earn money finding lost balls at the Toro Golf Club in Fort Portal, Western Uganda, and selling them back to the members, he received his first introduction to the great game of golf.
However, Isaiah was firmly of the opinion that the Academy shouldn’t only introduce to and provide coaching for these youngsters in golf, but that it should offer a more rounded and holistic approach to the problems faced by the students in terms of continued education, life skills and an appreciation of the environment. In a space of three years the AFRIYEA Golf Academy the academy has introduced golf to over 1000 children from 21 schools in Uganda have not only gained golf skills but also social skills and environmental knowledge.

The S.T.E.M. Program

STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The majority of the youth and children in Uganda and Africa lack contemporary ‘STEM’ skills to make them competitive in the job market. In addition to inadequate technical STEM skills, the lack of self-drive, enthusiasm, motivation, teamwork, communication and reporting are far more concerning. To bridge the skills gap in STEM, AFRIYEA Golf Academy designed areas to enable the young people to get quality education and life skills
Girls in STEM
In Uganda, girls are particularly under-represented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. There is low enrolment, poor performance, and high numbers of dropouts. In 2014, a government report revealed a severe drop between 2009 and 2014 in the percentage of girls passing biology and mathematics examinations. This gender gap reduces the number of women who pursue STEM careers. UNESCO notes that currently less than a third of science researchers in Uganda are women. To bridge this gap, the academy has prioritized girls so that they can gain confidence and lead the change.
Girls Mentoring Committee
This committee provides monthly activities for growth of character in STEM, life skills, networking and the game of golf through small group mentorship experiences between adult volunteers and academy girl’s members. This promotes leadership confidence amongst girls.
Girl Ambassadors
The girl ambassadors inspire other young girls into falling in love with science and technology. The ambassadors are invited to guest lectures, career days, and assemblies to inspire fellow girls into the fields of STEM.
